INSAIT unveils a new generation of AI: precision models for business and an upgraded BgGPT chat for all citizens
.
The technology is of strategic importance for Bulgaria’s sovereignty in artificial intelligence, and BgGPT now supports voice and image recognition and can be downloaded as a mobile app.
The third version of BgGPT, Bulgaria’s AI-powered chat, now recognizes images and voice, processes documents, and integrates internet search. This was announced during a public presentation of the new capabilities of Bulgarian artificial intelligence, attended by Prof. Martin Vechev, founder and scientific director of the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT), and Eng. Borislav Petrov, its executive director. As of today, the new functionalities are freely available to Bulgarian users and institutions and have been fully developed by the Institute at Sofia University.
BgGPT 3.0 is accessible through the public chat platform at bggpt.ai, where any user can use its features freely and at no cost. Its use is further enhanced by new mobile applications for iOS and Android, available for download free of charge across all device types.
The new version enables analysis of images and documents, allowing users to work seamlessly with both text and visual information. Compared to previous versions, BgGPT 3.0 demonstrates improved instruction-following, can handle more complex tasks, and supports conversations up to nearly 20 times longer. Thanks to these improvements, it can process and understand significantly larger volumes of text.
In addition to the public chat available to all citizens, INSAIT is also releasing the models behind BgGPT 3.0 in three sizes — 4B, 12B, and 27B. This range allows businesses to implement solutions with optimal efficiency and hardware requirements depending on the specific use case. The models perform exceptionally well in both Bulgarian and English.
They are based on Google Gemma 3 and have been further trained using INSAIT’s new technology and a dataset exceeding 100 billion Bulgarian words. As a result, BgGPT 3.0 27B outperforms models nearly ten times larger when working in Bulgarian. More information is available at models.bggpt.ai, where the models can be freely downloaded and integrated by any company or institution. They can also be accessed directly via API key for organizations that do not have the necessary hardware.
National open models like BgGPT are becoming critically important as countries strive for technological sovereignty, the development of domestic capabilities, and stronger data protection in AI usage. INSAIT’s consistent strategic efforts to build a sovereign technological platform for Bulgaria are already yielding results — Bulgarian models now achieve performance comparable to models dozens of times larger.
This enables the Institute to implement projects with key government institutions such as the National Revenue Agency and the Bulgarian National Audit Office. These projects run on dedicated infrastructure, ensuring data security and enabling work with sensitive information while reducing dependence on foreign providers.
