Mortgage rates spiked again this week and reached their highest levels in two years, ruining refinancing plans for many homeowners while anxious homebuyers try to beat the clock.
The benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 4.66 percent, compared with 4.48 percent last week, according to the Bankrate.com national survey of large lenders. The mortgages in this week’s survey had an average total of 0.28 discount and origination points. One year ago, that rate stood at 3.79 percent. Four weeks ago, it was 4.14 percent.
The benchmark rate on the 30-year fixed has risen …

Many Bulgarians are outraged that a figure like Mr. Peevski was placed in a sensitive state position in charge of fighting the most serious crimes, a job that includes access to classified information and the power to order arrests and wiretaps.
“If you read the biography of Peevski, he personifies all the problems of Bulgaria,” Pavel Antonov, 40, said at a recent protest, referring to corruption, nepotism, organized crime and the abuse of state power.
“He has a very ugly personality: his way of speaking, his behavior, his arrogance,” Mr. Antonov said. “It’s galvanized the people.”

“If nothing else helps, if there are not even attempts to reach agreement, then the only democratic solution is elections,” Rosen Plevneliev said.
The parliament, not the president, has the power to call new elections.
Bulgaria has been in political turmoil for months. The current government took office after a snap election in May.
“There have been incessant protests in Bulgaria for 22 days now and I still do not see politicians making a clear effort to take notice of what is happening and explain to the nation in plain terms what they will do about it,” President Plevneliev complained in a national address.

Each of the trillions of human body cells contains six feet of linear DNA strands, if all 46 chromosomes were unpackaged, unwound, and placed end-to-end. Clearly, only an intelligent person could write a library of books onto a material so small as to be utterly invisible. Just as clearly, only a super-intelligence could double the density of that written information by writing what are essentially moldable, modular sentences that can be read in two directions.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTY is being redefined in America, or at least many would like it to be. Our secular establishment wants to reduce the autonomy of religious institutions and limit the influence of faith in the public square. The reason is not hard to grasp. In America, “religion” largely means Christianity, and today our secular culture views orthodox Christian churches as troublesome, retrograde, and reactionary forces. They’re seen as anti-science, anti-gay, and anti-women—which is to say anti-progress as the Left defines progress. Not surprisingly, then, the Left believes society will be best served if Christians are limited in their influence on public life. And in the short run this view is likely to succeed. There will be many arguments urging Christians to keep their religion strictly religious rather than “political.”
