Thousands of protesters in Istanbul clashed with police in the most violent rally Turkey has seen in years. Hundreds have been injured and dozens arrested in fierce rioting which the media has dubbed the Turkish Spring as it spreads across the country.
Turkish activists distributed the following appeal:
“Attention! Turkish democracy needs you!
After a series of peaceful demonstrations to preserve green space in the center of Istanbul, where the authorities are planning to build a large shopping center, Turkish police brutally attacked demonstrators with tear gas and water cannons aiming at the faces and bodies of the protesters. Dozens of demonstrators were hospitalized, and access to the park has been prohibited, without legal justification. Turkish media associated with the government and political parties conceal information about the incident. News agencies are blocking the flow of news.
So please spread the information around the world about what the police state of the Party of Justice and Development, led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, does.
Turkish democracy needs your help!”
